YOGI BREISNER - 05/26/16 - STRIDE CONTROL The first three parts of this six part video have a total running time of 48:00.  Yogi Breisner leads an ICP clinic on the importance of stride control in successful show jumping.

Part 1: Yogi Breisner begins this session of the ICP by talking about seeing a stride and how flexible the event horse can be with their take off spot and the important the rhythm and balance of the canter while approaching the fence. He talks about the attributes of a successful event horse compared to a dressage horse or show jumper. He asks the riders to warm up at the walk a perform square halts as he introduces the idea of stride control.
Part 2: Yogi now has the riders move to the trot, making sure to use a half halt in the changes of direction. He has them collect for a few steps and then he explains the half halt. In the canter he challenges them to ride absolutely straight as if entering the dressage ring on center line. He describes what straightness is needed for jumping as opposed to dressage. As they ride a straight line and collect at a specific point, Yogi asks them to remain very straight. He describes how the position of the rider affects their effectiveness in collection.
Part 3: They reverse and repeat the exercise to the right while Yogi talks about how important these skills are in jumping. He has them ride a pattern of poles on the ground with flying changes over the poles when changing direction, building up to the actual course they will ride consisting of a lot of bending lines. Yogi talks through the issues that each rider had including the importance of landing from a fence and staying absolutely straight. He recommends trainers ask their riders to perfect these exercises with a caution for complacency. All these exercises prepare the riders and horses for jumping the course, as shown in the next video in this series coming soon!
